Interested in supporting your local farmers and eating healthier meals?

The East Lake Farmers Market is taking orders, again, for their Market Basket Program.

How does it work? Get a basket of the freshest produce for an 18 week season (June 13 – October 10, or by the week. Baskets will contain a variety of seasonal produce, recipes, and preparation tips, as well as occasional specialty items such as honey or pastries.

*Baskets are only $25 dollars a week. Each basket is filled with fresh and local produce to feed a family of two-four for a week.

Baskets must be picked up at the market on Saturdays. Order as a group, and find several people from your church or agency who are willing to share in picking the baskets up! (NEW IN 2009: MARKET BASKET PROGRAM OFFERING DROP OFF SITES AROUND THE BIRMINGHAM AREA. CALL US TO FIND A DROP OFF SITE NEAR YOU!!)

$25 per basket or $400 for the season. The fee for the baskets can be paid in 3 installments throughout the season.

All checks can be made out to: P.E.E.R., Inc

This money goes to support our inner-city farmers' market and community.

Donations to this program will help to furnish baskets to neighborhood seniors and to area feeding agencies.  For just $10-$20 a week, your money could provide fresh produce to a neighborhood senior or low-income family.

To make a donation or to find out about the market basket program please contact Cheryl Hinnen at Cheryl.EastLakeUMC@gmail.com or 205-836-3201.

The Alabama Farmers Market Authority has a new web-based program connecting farmers with potential consumers wanting Alabama grown produce. Farmers list fruits and vegetables and potential buyers who are registered with the site will then be able to contact farmers directly. Please visit www.BuyLocalAlabama.com site and click on the green Farmer Connect icon to register and use the site.
